Procedures:
CALDA Membership requires that each member participate in Continuing Education by completing 15 units of CE every 2 years, which shall include 5 hours of UPL/Ethics as adopted by the Membership November 3, 2001. The following will constitute Continuing Education (CE) credit in any area and the procedures for completing the mandatory 5 hours of UPL/Ethics:

1. Class Attendance
 Class attendance at seminars or courses relevant to the LDA profession and its exemptions to the registration law (i.e. BBP, SSA, State agency law, etc.) will be given CE credit. Course credits will be given for any relevant topics, i.e. notary education, LDA, paralegal courses, any administrative proceeding education, and education required for other licenses.

CE credit that contains a description of the seminar topic, issues to be presented, or a copy of the seminar brochure will be maintained by the member.

One (1) contact hour of a course or seminar will equal one (1) CE credit.

2. Teaching, Speaking, and Guest Lecturing
Teaching, speaking, or guest lecturing at a seminar or course on substantive law or professional issues relevant to LDA's and IP's otherwise exempt from the LDA law will be given CE credit.

CE that contains a description of the seminar topic, issues to be presented, or a copy of the seminar brochure credit will be maintained by the member.

One (1) contact hour of a course or seminar will equal two (2) CE credits.

3. Published Articles
 Publishing an article on substantive law or a professional issue will qualify for CE credit. Articles must be the author's original work product. Editorial articles are included in this category.

Copies of the articles will be maintained by the member.

Each written page (single spaced typed or published page) will equal two (2) CE credits.

4. Self-Help Materials, Books and Computer Programs
Purchasing self-help books by Nolo.Com, Nolo Occidental, and other types of self-help books that are readily available in the public domain will be given CE credit. Readily available in the public domain will mean that any individual can order a self-help book. For example, books purchased in a bookstore on over the Internet will qualify.

Purchasing of other books by West Group, Matthew Bender, James Publishing, and the like, including computer programs and databases, used to enhance practice areas, will be given CE credit.

One-half (1/2) credit will be given for each self-help book purchased.
One-half (1/2) credit will be given for any other books and materials purchased to enhance practice areas.

Monthly subscriptions to books and computer programs, including, but not limited to, subscription updates for the like, will be given one-half (1/2) credit.

Copies of the receipts will be maintained by the member.

5. Subscriptions
Subscriptions to legal periodicals and magazines relevant to the LDA profession and its exemptions to the registration law (i.e. BBP, SSA, State agency law, etc.) will be given CE credit. CE credits will be given in the areas of notary education, paralegal issues, any administrative issues, and periodicals for other licenses. (This does not include CALDA's ACCESS newsletter.)

One-quarter (1/4) credit will be given for each subscription.

Copies of the mailing labels will be maintained by the member.

6. Chapter Meetings
CE Credit will be given for attendance at CALDA Chapter Meetings provided education or a speaker is provided. Round table discussions will also apply.

One (1) hour of credit will be given for each Chapter Meeting attended.

Copies of the agenda or minutes will be maintained by the member.

7. Quizzes
The Education Chairperson may, from time to time, submit quizzes covering general topic areas that will be included in the ACCESS newsletter or on the Web Page.

The member will submit the answer page to the Education Chairperson for grading within 10 days of the publication date.

Those passing with a grade of 70% or more will receive two (2) credits.

The Education Chairperson will give the corrected answer page back to the member to maintain in their files.

8. UPL and Ethics (mandatory 5 hours every 2 years)
Each year at the annual conference, CALDA will offer a course in UPL and Ethics. Attendance at this class will fulfill the 5-hour/every 2 years requirement.
Procedures for Submitting Credit:
Each member shall maintain a list of classes, teaching agenda, published materials, receipts and related CE materials. At the time of renewal of your membership in CALDA, you will be asked to sign a statement, under penalty of perjury that you are in compliance with CALDA’s educational requirement.

Exceptions to items 1 through 7 will be made at the sole discretion of the Membership Chairperson. As much latitude will be given as possible so all members may comply.
